Spani's PM Sánchez Refuses to Resign Amid Wife's Allegations

Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has made it clear he's not stepping down, despite recent accusations against his wife. Last week, he decided to pause his official duties after allegations of corruption surfaced regarding his wife's dealings. He labeled these allegations as part of a smear campaign orchestrated by the right-wing media.

Sánchez, who has been leading Spain since 2018, surprised many within his own party by taking this break to ponder over his role as prime minister. The accusations against his wife, Begoña Gómez, were brought forward by an organization called Manos Limpias (Clean Hands), led by a figure associated with the far-right.

However, on Thursday, Madrid's public prosecutor recommended shelving the investigation due to a lack of evidence. Manos Limpias also admitted that some of the allegations might not hold water as they were based on online news articles, one of which was already proven false.

Despite this, Sánchez announced that he would step back from his public duties temporarily to contemplate his future as the leader of the government. He expressed uncertainty about whether continuing in his role was worth it and promised to make a decision by April 29.

The decision to take this break followed a Spanish court's announcement of launching a preliminary investigation into the accusations against his wife. The court initiated this probe based on a complaint filed by Manos Limpias.

Sánchez clarified that his wife had done nothing wrong and vowed to cooperate with the investigation to prove her innocence. He also criticized opposition leaders, accusing them of collaborating with those spreading allegations against his wife.

His cabinet members have expressed their support for him during this challenging time, emphasizing the need to defend democracy and the progressive bloc.

This move by Sánchez doesn't come as a surprise to those familiar with his political style. He's known for his bold decisions and risk-taking, earning him the nickname “El Guapo” (Mr. Handsome). Last year, he called for snap elections after his party's poor performance in regional elections and later formed a coalition government through controversial means.

If Sánchez were to resign, it could lead to further political instability, possibly resulting in another general election. However, some are skeptical about his intentions, seeing his announcement as a tactic to garner sympathy and attention.

Corruption scandals have plagued politics in the Iberian Peninsula in recent years, further complicating the political landscape. Sánchez himself rose to power through a no-confidence vote against Mariano Rajoy of the PP in 2018, following a corruption scandal within Rajoy's party.

In neighboring Portugal, Socialist Antonio Costa faced allegations of graft last year, leading to his resignation. Sánchez's decision comes amidst a crucial time as Spain's Socialists gear up for regional elections in Catalonia and European Parliament elections in June.
