Freedom of Speech? | Nupur Sharma Controversy

Nupur Sharma Controversy

The Nupur Sharma controversy rocked the country. A statement from a political party official caused a boycott of Indian products in other countries.

There were protests in many places in India. In some regions, the protests turned violent. Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh are some places that fell under the influence.

There was stone-pelting, and police workers were injured. The police fired in the air to dispense crowded areas, and it led to the death of 2 persons.

What was the whole issue? Where can you stop and put a line between hate and freedom of speech?

Let us understand this all together in this article. Let us begin.

●    When did the issue begin?

The controversy hadn't begun with Nupur Shama's comment. Instead, it started with the issue of the Gyanwapi Mosque.

In April 2022, the Varanasi Court ordered a video survey in the Kashi Vishwanath Temple and Gyanwapi Mosque complexes.

After the survey, they found a thing in the mosque. Some people identified the object as a Shivling. On the other hand, some stated that it is a fountain.

There was no investigation into it, but social media discussed it extensively. Some jokes were cracked on this that hurt the sentiments of some people. They said their religion was getting mocked.

During this time, DU professor Ratan Lal made an objectionable social media post.

Not only was an FIR registered against him, but DR Ratan was charged with Section 135A and arrested by the police.

●    Statements from Nupur Sharma

Here enters the ex-BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma. On 26th May, she came on the News 24 program and passed some controversial remarks about Islam and the prophet Mohammed.

News anchor Manka Gupta asked Nupur Sharma to stop passing such comments, but Nupur Sharma didn't like the rebuke and left the program.

Nupur Sharma didn't stop here. At 9 PM IST, she went on TimesNow and repeated the same things.

One of the things to be noted about the controversial statements by Nupur Sharma was that it wasn't a mistake, and she deliberately made such comments because she repeated the same thing in distinct places.

She said that she made these statements because she couldn't tolerate that some people were insulting the Shivling.

●    Were there any Violations?

So, now the question arises – Did she violate section295A? Does her comment offend reasonable strong-minded form and courageous people?

It all depends on the final verdict by the court.

●    Banning Indian Products and Final Outcome

During this period, the clip of Nupur Sharma went viral on the internet, even in Arab countries. A total of 16 countries issued statements against India.

Iraq, Iran, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Malaysia, UAE, Jordan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bahrain, Maldives, Turkey, and Indonesia.

The gulf nations asked for an apology from the Indian government. In some places, there were slogans for banning Indian products.

These countries are valuable to India. Looking at the reaction of these countries, the Modi government went into damage control mode. As a result, Nupur Sharma was relieved from the party.
