Humza Yousaf made a heartfelt announcement that he's stepping down as first minister and leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP), just over a year after his election.

During a press conference at his official residence, Bute House, Yousaf expressed his decision to remain in his position until his successor is elected, ensuring a smooth transition.

He shared, “After reflecting on what's best for my party, government, and the country, I believe rebuilding relationships across political lines requires new leadership. So, I've informed the SNP's national secretary of my intention to step down as party leader.”

Yousaf got emotional as he thanked his family for their support, acknowledging their sacrifices. He mentioned, “I owe everything to my amazing wife, children, and extended family. You'll be seeing more of me now. You mean the world to me.”

Facing two looming confidence votes in the Scottish Parliament due to a crisis triggered by his decision to end the governing partnership with the Scottish Greens, Yousaf found himself in a difficult situation.

The Scottish Greens announced their support for a motion of no confidence in Yousaf's leadership, following his move to scrap the partnership agreement. With the SNP falling short of a majority without Green support, Yousaf was left depending on the vote of Ash Regan, who left the SNP to join Alex Salmond's Alba party last year.

Yousaf, who made history as Scotland's first leader of Asian and Muslim heritage, ended the Bute House agreement due to internal SNP criticism of Green influence on policies.

The Scottish Green Partywas planning its own vote on the future of the agreement, sparked by discontent over climate targets and a decision regarding NHS Scotland's treatment options.

Yousaf's tenure faced numerous challenges, including an ongoing police investigation into party finances, which led to the arrest of Nicola Sturgeon and her husband, Peter Murrell, the former SNP chief executive.

In response to Yousaf's resignation, Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar called for an election, asserting that the SNP is divided and incapable of addressing Scotland's challenges. Sarwar emphasized the need for the people of Scotland to choose their leader through an election, signaling a call for change.
