OpenAI CEO Launches Worldcoin: Crypto Project with World IDs

San Francisco and Berlin-based Tools for Humanity, a cryptocurrency project founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, is set to launch its Worldcoin initiative on Monday. The project's central feature is the “World ID,” an account accessible only to real humans.

To obtain a World ID, users must undergo an in-person iris scan using Worldcoin's device called the “orb,” a silver ball roughly the size of a bowling ball. Once the orb verifies the person's identity as a genuine human, a World ID is created for them.

Worldcoin is starting its public launch with an already established user base of 2 million individuals from its beta phase. In preparation for the launch, Worldcoin is expanding its “orbing” operations to 35 cities across 20 countries. In select countries, users who sign up will also receive Worldcoin's cryptocurrency token WLD as an incentive.

The significance of World IDs lies in the fact that they can be stored on cryptocurrency blockchains, ensuring privacy and immunity from control or shut down by any single entity. This feature is especially crucial in an era dominated by generative AI chatbots like ChatGPT, capable of producing human-like language. World IDs can be utilized to distinguish between real human users and AI bots on online platforms.

The project's partnership with Binance, the largest cryptocurrency exchange, means that Worldcoin will be listed on the exchange, with trading expected to commence on Monday at 0900 GMT.

Altman emphasized that Worldcoin could play a significant role in addressing the economic impact of generative AI. With AI expected to replace many human jobs, Altman sees the potential for implementing universal basic income (UBI) to combat income inequality. UBI is a social benefits program that provides regular payments to individuals. The use of World IDs could help prevent fraud when distributing UBI payments since only real individuals can possess World IDs.

While Altman acknowledges that a world with widespread UBI implementation is still far in the future, he believes Worldcoin lays the groundwork for making it a reality. Experimentation is necessary to determine the best approach for such programs, and Worldcoin aims to be a part of that exploration.

Overall, Worldcoin's World ID and its cryptocurrency token WLD aim to provide a secure and reliable system to verify the authenticity of users in a world increasingly shaped by generative AI technologies.
