NFL Player DJ Hayden Killed in Houston Car Crash

In a tragic incident that unfolded early Saturday morning at a downtown Houston intersection, former NFL cornerback DJ Hayden, along with two of his ex-teammates from the University of Houston, lost their lives in a devastating collision. The accident, which claimed a total of six lives, occurred around 2 a.m. when a Chrysler 300, reportedly speeding, ran a red light and collided with an Acura SUV.

The fatal crash took the lives of Hayden, Zachary McMillian, and Ralph Oragwu, former University of Houston players who were in the SUV. The driver of the Chrysler, whose identity remains undisclosed, also perished in the collision. Additionally, a pedestrian, believed to be homeless, lost their life in this tragic event.

Houston Police Assistant Chief Megan Howard, as reported by the Associated Press, confirmed the details of the crash. However, the investigation is still ongoing, with key details such as the identification of the SUV's driver yet to be determined.

Jeffery Lewis, another former University of Houston player who was a passenger in the SUV, survived the crash and has been interviewed by the police. Unfortunately, a female passenger from one of the vehicles is currently in critical condition.

DJ Hayden, a 33-year-old Houston native, had a remarkable journey in his football career. In 2012, as a senior at the University of Houston, he overcame a near-fatal heart injury sustained during practice, thanks to the swift action of trainers and medical staff.

His remarkable recovery led to his selection as a first-round NFL draft pick in 2013, and he went on to play eight seasons with teams including the Oakland Raiders, Detroit Lions, and Jacksonville Jaguars.

The football community is deeply saddened by the loss of these talented athletes. Former UH football coach Tony Levine shared his heartbreak on social media, remembering the exceptional qualities of McMillian, Hayden, and Oragwu.

The Oakland Raiders also released a statement, honoring Hayden's courage, perseverance, and dedication while extending condolences to the grieving families. The impact of this tragic accident resonates not only within the football world but also in the broader Houston community.
