AP Dhillon: Coachella 2024 Guitar Smash & Sidhu Moosewala Tribute

AP Dhillons recent performance at Coachella 2024, one of the world's biggest music festivals, stirred up quite a buzz, but not entirely for the reasons he might have hoped. During his set, the Punjabi singer did something unexpected—he broke his guitar on stage. This act sparked a flurry of reactions on social media, with some users criticizing him for the move.

In response to the backlash, AP Dhillon took to Instagram, sharing a series of candid photos from his Coachella performance, including one just before he smashed his guitar. In his caption, he seemed to defend his action, mentioning something about the ‘controlled media'. However, this justification didn't sit well with everyone.

One comment on his post pointed out, “But Sidhu Moosewala would have also respected the musical instruments, being an artist, if he was here to see this. So before making loose statements like ‘media is controlled’, you better learn some good manners and values, buddy. God bless.” Another user simply called his caption “cringe.”

A fan chimed in with, “You’re justifying wrong things brother. Are you even remembering your culture of how we treat musical instruments? That guitar was the one you held for your show and it produced the vibration you wanted. After that destroying it was the coolest thing? This is an act of a fool. A true musician loves his instruments more than music. Show some respect, accept it, and apologize to yourself, not to us. All we can see is your graph going down. If music gave you the fame, at least learn to respect it.”

AP Dhillon, known for hits like “Excuses,” “Summer High,” and “Brown Munde,” is no stranger to the limelight. His docu-series “AP Dhillon: First Of A Kind” premiered on Prime Video last year, showcasing his journey in the music industry.

During his Coachella performance, AP Dhillon and songwriter-rapper Shinda Kahlon paid tribute to the late Sidhu Moosewala with a display that read ‘Justice for Sidhu Moosewala’ on the screen. However, this gesture was somewhat overshadowed by the guitar-smashing incident that followed.

A video of AP Dhillon breaking his guitar went viral, and while the crowd at Coachella seemed thrilled, the internet had mixed feelings. Comments on his Instagram post ranged from disappointment to comparisons with other artists like Diljit Dosanjh, known for his respect for instruments. Coachella itself shared pictures from the show, captioning one of them “It’s a smash @ap.dhillxn.”

AP Dhillon, also known as Amritpal Singh Dhillon, is an Indo-Canadian singer, rapper, and record producer who has seen significant success in Punjabi music. His singles have topped the charts, and tracks like “Majhail” and “Brown Munde” have even made it onto the Billboard charts. In 2022, he collaborated with Amazon Prime Video for the promotion of “The Boys” season 3, featuring an exclusive version of his track “Insane” in the trailer. He made history as the first Punjabi artist to perform at the Juno Awards in 2023, showcasing his hit “Summer High” at the event.

Coachella 2024 kicked off in April at Indio, California, featuring a lineup that included Lil Uzi Vert, Sabrina Carpenter, Lana Del Ray, Sid Sriram, and ATEEZ among others. AP Dhillon's performance certainly made waves, but perhaps not entirely in the way he had intended.
