The Supreme Court’s Take on the Gangster Abu Salem

The topic of this Gangster Abu Salem is hot again these days. According to a statement from the Supreme Court to the center, Supreme Court stated that the center needs to respect the commitment given to the Portugal government.

In 2005, Salem was brought back to India upon promises given by the Indian government to the Portugal government. The first promise was not to give the death sentence to Abu Salem, and the second was to release him after 25 years of jail imprisonment.

The accused made a plea to Supreme Court that his sentence cannot exceed more than 25 years as per the official undertaking given by India to Portugal.

Abu Salem and D-Company

Abu Salem is an Indian Gangster and a terrorist. Abu Salem worked for the D-Company, operated by the Dawood Ibrahim gang.

In his early days in the gang, he worked as a transporter of guns and other artillery goods. Later, he started working closely with Dawood Ibrahim.

He belongs to Azamgarh, a town in Uttar Pradesh. To conduct illegal activities and murders, he introduced a unique idea of bringing unemployed youngsters from his hometown to Mumbai.

These youngsters conducted shootouts on Mumbai premises and later returned to their hometowns. It left Mumbai Police in a situation that made it hard for them to trace back the origin of the murderers.

Extorting Money From the Bollywood

The terrorist is infamous for extracting money from Bollywood film producers like Gulshan Kumar, Subhash Ghai, Rajiv Rai, and Rakesh Roshan.

He is the mind behind threatening and extracting money from the film producers. In 1997, he and his gang planned and assassinated Gulshan Kumar because he refused to pay extortion money.

Statement from SC

Justice SK Kaul and MM Sundresh said the Central Government needs to advise the president of India to exercise his power and fulfill the commitment given to the Portugal government.

They also added that the necessary papers for bailing out Abu Salem need submission within the month after the completion of 25 years.

In 2015, the special Court TADA gave life imprisonment to Abu Salem, who was involved in multiple cases of serial blasts in 1993 and extorting money from film producers.

In addition, he was also involved in another case for the murder of Pradeep Jain, a Mumbai-based builder, in 1995.

Verdict by SC

After he fled India, Abu Salem was taken into custody by Portugal Interpol along with Monica Bedi in 2002.

He had a fake passport and other fake documents, which made Portugal police take such actions. Later in 2004, the Portugal Court cleared his extradition to India so that he could face trial in the 1993 Bombay bomb blast case.

He was handed over to the Indian government in 2005 with the assurance that he should not face the death penalty.

In May 2022, the court reserved judgment on Salem’s case. On July 11th, 2022, the Supreme Court might announce its final order in a plea forwarded by Abu Salem.
