On Tuesday, the nation mourned the loss of Parkash Singh Badal, the 95-year-old statesman and chief minister of Punjab, who passed away after being hospitalized in Mohali for a week. Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid his last respects to the veteran leader on Wednesday at the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) party office in Chandigarh.

Expressing his condolences on Twitter, PM Modi stated, “Parkash Singh Badal's passing away is a personal loss for me. I have interacted closely with him for many decades and learnt so much from him.” He fondly recalled numerous conversations with the SAD patriarch, where his wisdom shone through, describing him as a “remarkable statesman who contributed greatly to our nation and worked tirelessly for the progress of Punjab.”

As a mark of respect to the late politician, the Centre has announced a two-day state mourning across India. “On the days of mourning, the national flag will be flown at half-mast on all buildings where the national flag is regularly flown, and there will be no official entertainment on these two days,” stated a government statement.

Parkash Singh Badal's political journey began from being a village sarpanch, and he went on to serve as the chief minister of Punjab for five terms. However, in recent times, his party had broken ties with the BJP due to the farmers' protest in 2020, and he had also returned his Padma Vibhushan award, the second-highest civilian honor in the country, as a sign of protest against the government's treatment of the protesting farmers.

The veteran leader was admitted to Fortis Hospital in Mohali a week ago after experiencing difficulty in breathing. Despite receiving appropriate medical care, he succumbed to his illness, as stated by Fortis Hospital Mohali in a statement expressing their condolences for his demise.

The nation bids farewell to a respected and influential leader whose contributions to Punjab and the country will be remembered for years to come. PM Modi's visit to pay his last respects to Parkash Singh Badal is a testament to the profound impact he had on the political landscape of India.
