In a heart-wrenching incident that shook Manipur to its core, two tribal women were subjected to unspeakable horrors, paraded naked on a road, and allegedly gang-raped by a group of men. The incident occurred on May 4 in Kangpokpi district, triggering widespread condemnation and calls for justice.

Adding to the tragedy, the video of the appalling act was shared on social media, exposing the identities of the victims and sparking a wave of public anger. Let's delve deeper into this tragic event and the subsequent response from the authorities and the public.

The incident occurred amidst clashes between the valley-majority Meitei and the hill-majority Kuki tribe in Manipur. The Meiteis were demanding Scheduled Tribes (ST) status, and this unrest set the backdrop for the heinous act perpetrated against the two innocent women. The Indigenous Tribal Leaders' Forum (ITLF) released a statement detailing the horrifying ordeal suffered by the victims, who were constantly molested and subjected to cruel treatment as they cried and pleaded for mercy.

The ITLF, along with numerous political leaders and concerned citizens, called upon the National Commission for Women and the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes to take immediate action and bring the culprits to justice. Chief Minister N Biren Singh, responding to the outrage, ordered a priority investigation into the case. Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani also expressed her concern and was assured of swift action against the perpetrators.

The Manipur Police promptly filed a case of gang rape and murder and began their investigation. They identified the suspects responsible for the heinous act and were determined to apprehend them. However, the survivors reported the crime 15 days after the incident, creating some initial challenges in locating the crime scene. Nevertheless, the police were confident of arresting the culprits soon and ensuring that justice prevails.

People across India expressed shock and anger over the incident, demanding that the central and state governments take decisive action against those involved. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Tripura's Tipra Motha Party chief Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma were among the prominent figures who condemned the act and urged authorities to act swiftly.

Internet Shutdown and Ongoing Unrest:

Since May 4, the internet has been disconnected in BJP-ruled Manipur, further isolating the region amidst sporadic violence. The Kuki tribe demanded the Chief Minister's resignation in the wake of the tragedy. Ethnic violence has resulted in over 120 deaths, and thousands of people have been internally displaced, seeking refuge in relief camps.

The appalling incident in Manipur, where two women were subjected to brutal violence and humiliation, has shocked the nation. The call for justice and solidarity from various quarters is a reminder that such heinous acts have no place in a civilized society. As the investigation progresses, it is essential for the authorities to ensure that the perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice, providing some solace to the victims and their families. Moreover, it highlights the urgent need for societal change, promoting respect, and ensuring the safety and dignity of all individuals, irrespective of their background.
