The Lok Sabha elections for 2024 are gearing up with the first phase covering 102 constituencies across 21 states and union territories. This is the kick-off of the 18th Lok Sabha elections, starting on April 19. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has laid out the schedule: the second phase will follow on April 26, the third on May 7, the fourth on May 13, the fifth on May 20, the sixth on May 25, and the last phase on June 1. Votes will be tallied up on June 4.

During this period, alongside the Lok Sabha elections, assembly elections will also be held in Arunachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Sikkim.

In the initial phase, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh will be casting their votes to elect their respective assemblies.

In the initial phase of the elections, 102 constituencies across 21 states and union territories (UTs) will be covered. Among these, 10 states and UTs will be fully covered, while the remaining 11 will be partially covered.

Here's a look at the constituencies voting in phase 1:

  5. Chhattisgarh (1): Bastar
  6. Jammu and Kashmir (1): Udhampur
  7. Lakshadweep (1): Lakshadweep
  8. Madhya Pradesh (6): Chhindwara, Balaghat, Jabalpur, Mandla, Sidhi, Shahdol
  9. Maharashtra (5): Nagpur, Chandrapur, Bhandara-Gondiya, Gadchiroli-Chimur, Ramtek
  10. Manipur (2): Inner Manipur, Outer Manipur
  11. Meghalaya (2): Shillong, Tura
  12. Mizoram (1): Mizoram
  13. Nagaland (1): Nagaland

Who are the Key Candidates?

In Tamil Nadu, all 39 constituencies will see polling, featuring notable candidates such as former Telangana governor Tamilisai Soundararajan in Chennai South, DMK leader Dayanidhi Maran in Chennai Central, former Union minister A Raja in Nilgiris, and Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai in Coimbatore.

In the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, Union minister Jitendra Singh is contesting from Udhampur. Meanwhile, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari is in the fray for the third time from Nagpur.

Assam sees Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal in the contest from Dibrugarh, and Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi vying for Jorhat.
