Instagram Deletes Fake Tim Cook Account; Senior VPs Also Affected
In a recent turn of events, a counterfeit Instagram account impersonating Apple's CEO Tim Cook was swiftly removed by the platform. This deceptive account, which was detected by 9to5Mac, managed to gather followers, including prominent Apple Vice Presidents like Lisa Jackson, who oversees Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives, and Alan Dye, responsible for Human Interface Design.
The fraudulent account operated under the handle “Tim. cook,” but it's important to note that Tim Cook has exclusively utilized Twitter (now referred to as ‘X') as his social media outlet since 2013. Apple, on its part, maintains its official presence across various social media platforms. Several high-ranking Apple executives are also known to engage with audiences on platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram. However, Tim Cook's personal involvement remains focused on ‘X.'
The spurious Tim Cook account went to the extent of sharing posts, beginning with a duo of pictures released on August 20 in celebration of World Photography Day. Both photos showcased the capabilities of the iPhone's camera, as they were taken with the device itself. A subsequent post appeared on August 23, featuring a 30-second promotional video in collaboration with 3DPets. Both posts were copied from Cook's official ‘X' page, emphasizing the camera and LiDAR features of the iPhone 14 Pro.
While Tim Cook maintains an active presence on ‘X,' he has expressed concerns about the design of the platform. During an interaction with CNBC in 2021, Cook spoke about the negative impact of “mindless scrolling” on mental health for both individuals and those around them.
Cook has also been a vocal critic of Meta's (formerly known as Facebook) privacy practices. Apple introduced an anti-tracking feature with iOS 14.5 in 2021, which was met with criticism from Meta due to its potential impact on advertising revenue. Interestingly, Cook also abstains from using Threads, Meta's newly launched competitor to Twitter.
In a different Apple-related development, rumors are circulating about the possible launch of four new iPhones as part of the iPhone 15 series on September 12. These new models are anticipated to include upgraded chipsets and enhanced camera capabilities. Moreover, the standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus might sport a revamped notch design, akin to the adaptive notch introduced in the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max. This innovative notch occupies less screen space and adjusts its size based on notifications.
Apple's upcoming product releases don't stop there. In the coming month, the company is expected to introduce new Apple Watch models, including the Apple Watch 9, Watch SE (2023), and Watch Ultra (2023). Furthermore, there's speculation about the release of new Macs equipped with M3 chips in October. The next generation of iPad Pros might make their debut early the following year. While Apple is yet to officially confirm these launches, anticipation continues to build among eager consumers.
