IMD Issues a “Heavy Rainfall” Alert
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Heavy Rainfall alert for multiple states as another active phase of the southwest monsoon is expected to commence this week.
Despite heavy monsoon-induced floods and landslides in some regions, other parts of India experienced a deficiency in rainfall over the past fortnight. However, the weather office predicts that a low-pressure area and a cyclonic circulation developing around Tuesday will likely bring good rainfall, potentially covering the rain deficit in the central and peninsular regions. Additionally, the western disturbance will continue to bring rain to northern India.
The Weather Advisory for this week's states is as follows:
- Northern Odisha and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand have a low-pressure area, leading to heavy and widespread rainfall in these regions over the next five days. Specific districts in Odisha, such as Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Nuapada, Kandhamal, Bolangir, Sonepur, Deogarh, Nabarangapur, Koraput, Malkangiri, Kalahandi, and Bargarh, are expected to experience rainfall. Moreover, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangapur, Jagatsinghpur, Khordha, Puri, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, and Nuapada districts may witness very heavy rainfall on Tuesday.
- Himachal Pradesh, heavily affected by the monsoon, is not expected to find relief soon, as isolated rainfall is predicted over the next five days. Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and East Rajasthan will also experience similar weather conditions in the next three days.
- Haryana and Chandigarh are likely to see heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours. While this is happening, Delhi, which is experiencing flood-like conditions in some sections, is predicted to see cloudy sky, light rain, and thundershowers today.
- Bihar, West Bengal, and Sikkim will continue experiencing isolated rainfall today.
- Central India, particularly Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha (Maharashtra), and Chhattisgarh, is likely to witness isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall on specific dates.
- Konkan and Goa are anticipated to have isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall from July 18 to 21. Gujarat and central Maharashtra will also experience heavy showers in isolated areas until July 21. Isolated thunderstorms and lightning are likely over the region until July 17.
- Assam, currently facing severe floods, will continue to see heavy rainfall today. Meghalaya and Tripura will also experience similar weather conditions.
- For south India, Coastal Karnataka is expected to have light to moderate scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with isolated rainfall until July 21. Telangana will see widespread rainfall until July 20, and Andhra Pradesh and Kerala will experience similar weather conditions from July 18-20.
With these forecasts in place, residents and authorities in the affected regions should remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to stay safe during the active phase of the monsoon.
