Yang Hengjun: Australian Writer Suspended Death Sentence
Australian writer Yang Hengjun has received a suspended death sentence from a Chinese court, five years after being arrested on charges of spying. The sentence could be reduced to life imprisonment after two years, as per Australian officials.
Dr. Yang, a scholar and novelist who blogs about Chinese state affairs, denies the undisclosed charges. The Australian government expressed its dismay, with Foreign Minister Penny Wong summoning China's Ambassador for an explanation.
In a statement, Wong emphasized the need for basic standards of justice and humane treatment, in line with international norms. The government plans to convey its response to Beijing strongly. Despite previous concerns raised by Australian officials about Dr. Yang's treatment, China's foreign ministry cautioned against interference, citing judicial sovereignty.
Supporters argue that Dr. Yang's detention is politically motivated, citing his criticism of human rights abuses and advocacy for universal values. Formerly known as the “democracy peddler,” he worked for China's Ministry of State Security. Dr. Yang's case has unfolded mostly behind closed doors since his arrest in 2019 during a visit to Guangzhou.
Human Rights Watch Asia Director Elaine Pearson highlighted due process concerns, labeling the outcome as outrageous. Dr. Yang Hengjun still has avenues for appeal, according to Wong, but concerns about his health persist, as reported by his Australian-based sons.
The detainment of Dr. Yang, along with Australian journalist Cheng Lei in 2020, strained Beijing-Canberra relations. Although ties improved since Australia's government change in 2022, analysts suggest Dr. Yang's sentence may impact bilateral relations negatively, exposing flaws in the Chinese legal system and its response to foreign government requests. The prevailing sentiment is that this sentence, a suspended death penalty, might effectively lead to life imprisonment.
