Venus Floating Colony: 1,000 Humans by 2050 Dream!
Guillermo Söhnlein, the co-founder of OceanGate Expeditions, has set forth an ambitious goal to establish a “floating colony” on Venus by 2050, accommodating around 1,000 humans. This audacious plan comes amidst recent scrutiny due to a tragic incident involving their submersible, ‘Titan,' during a deep-sea expedition to the Titanic wreckage.
Söhnlein's Venusian vision is grounded in the concept of a habitable zone within the planet's atmosphere, situated approximately 30 miles above its surface.
In a recent interview with Insider, Söhnlein discussed his aspiration, comparing it to the prominent objective of sending a million people to Mars. He acknowledged the challenges but remained optimistic about the feasibility of human habitation in the Venusian atmosphere, where conditions are less extreme compared to the planet's surface.
The proposal raises questions about the logistics and technology required for such an endeavor. Söhnlein alluded to the idea that a specialized space station could withstand the corrosive effects of Venus's sulfuric acid-laden clouds, paving the way for hundreds, if not thousands, of people to reside there.
However, the practicality of this concept faces formidable hurdles. Venus, Earth's “sister planet,” presents a hellish environment with a thick, poisonous atmosphere predominantly composed of carbon dioxide. Its surface temperatures are scorching, reaching a staggering 900 degrees Fahrenheit (475 degrees Celsius), enough to melt lead. The surface is marred by towering mountains and numerous volcanoes.
Söhnlein's long-standing dream of advancing humanity's reach beyond Earth's boundaries traces back to his childhood. He envisions a future where human presence extends beyond our home planet, similar to his inspiration, Elon Musk's SpaceX, which aims to establish a human presence on Mars.
Drawing a parallel to Musk's innovative approach, Söhnlein discussed ‘Humans2Venus,' a venture studio co-founded by him and entrepreneur Khalid Al-Ali. This initiative seeks to overcome commercial barriers and generate creative startup ideas to facilitate human missions to Venus, mirroring the pioneering spirit of SpaceX.
However, it's crucial to address the recent tragedy involving OceanGate's submersible, ‘Titan.' The incident resulted in the loss of all five passengers, including prominent figures like OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush and Titanic expert Paul-Henri Nargeolet. The submersible went missing on June 18, 2023, and a debris field was discovered on June 22, 2023.
While Söhnlein's vision for a “floating colony” on Venus sparks intrigue and curiosity, the practicality and safety of such an endeavor remain subjects of extensive exploration and debate.
