Tata Memorial Centre Discovers ₹100 Cancer Prevention Tablet

Tata Memorial Centre, through its recent research, has developed a groundbreaking ₹100 tablet to minimize the side effects of chemotherapy and prevent cancer from coming back.

Finding a cure for cancer has always been a challenging goal, but Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) might be onto something significant.

They claim to have discovered a potential drug that not only stops cancer cells from returning but also comes at an affordable price of ₹100 per tablet. The new tablet aims to reduce the side effects of cancer treatment and prevent cancer from reoccurring.

Dr. Rajendra Badwe, Director of Tata Memorial Centre, mentioned in an interview that doctors at TMC have been working on this tablet for almost a decade. It is expected to receive approval from the Indian drug regulator by June or July.

Once approved, the tablet could significantly reduce the side effects of treatments like chemotherapy by 50% and the possibility of cancer relapse by 30%. This makes it the most cost-effective and efficient cancer treatment available, according to the institute director.

A ten-year research study conducted by doctors at Tata Memorial Hospital revealed that dying cancer cells release cell-free chromatin particles after chemotherapy and radiotherapy. These particles can turn healthy cells into cancerous ones.

The study found that a pro-oxidant combination of resveratrol and copper helped destroy the chromatin and manage toxicity in patients undergoing chemotherapy.

"Our research showed that a combination of resveratrol and copper effectively destroyed the chromatin. In our studies, we administered this combination orally and found that it prevented metastasis," Dr. Mittra explained. "Now, we need to conduct human trials to better understand how to improve our patients' outcomes, and potentially benefit the wider population of India," he added.

“We conducted an experiment where we implanted human breast cancer cells into immunodeficient mice,” said Dr. Indraneel Mittra, the lead scientist on the study. “Within six weeks, a small tumor formed. We then divided the mice into three groups based on the type of cancer treatment they received—chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery. We observed an increase in chromatin in the mouse brain with all three treatments.”

“Our research showed that a combination of resveratrol and copper effectively destroyed the chromatin. In our studies, we administered this combination orally and found that it prevented metastasis,” Dr. Mittra explained. “Now, we need to conduct human trials to better understand how to improve our patients' outcomes, and potentially benefit the wider population of India,” he added.

Russian President Vladimir Putin recently announced that Russian scientists are nearing the development of cancer vaccines, which will soon be available to patients.

Dr. Rajendra Badwe also shared insights on the research, stating, “This study delves into the mechanism of metastasis, which has been a mystery for so long. Through this research, we have gained an understanding of the qualities that cells possess for metastasis to occur and the factors that lead to metastasis.”

However, it may take a couple of years for people to benefit from this new treatment to prevent cancer recurrence, as Dr. Badwe mentioned that the trials will take at least 5–6 years.
