CM Manohar Lal Khattar Resigns Amid BJP-JJP Alliance Cracks

In a surprising turn of events, Manohar Lal Khattar has resigned as the Chief Minister of Haryana, paving the way for Nayab Singh Saini to step into the role. Saini is all set to take his oath at 5 pm on March 12.

This move comes amidst cracks in the ruling coalition of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) in the state, especially with the Lok Sabha elections looming. A spokesperson for the Haryana government confirmed that Khattar has submitted his resignation letter and cabinet to the Haryana governor.

Nayab Singh Saini, a prominent BJP leader, is poised to take the helm as the new Chief Minister of Haryana following Khattar's resignation. His swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for 5 pm on Tuesday.

The BJP and the JJP, led by Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala, found themselves at odds recently, particularly due to their inability to agree on a seat-sharing arrangement for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Notably, the BJP had secured all 10 Lok Sabha seats in Haryana during the 2019 elections.

Here are the latest updates on this political development:

  • The BJP asserts its strength with 41 MLAs, along with the support of five independents, which surpasses the halfway mark of 45 seats in the Haryana assembly.
  • Naib Singh Saini has been appointed as the new State BJP Chief, replacing Manohar Lal Khattar.
  • After submitting his resignation at Raj Bhawan, Khattar, along with BJP cabinet ministers and MLAs, convened a meeting at Haryana Niwas. Present were BJP incharge Biplab Kumar Deb, Nayab Saini, observers Arjun Munda and Tarun Chug, former state BJP chief and Rajya Sabha MP Subhash Barala.
  • Independent MLA Nayan Pal Rawat mentioned that the alliance was strained, but certain independent MLAs supporting the BJP government would ensure its continuation.
  • Another independent MLA, Dharampal Gonder, affirmed that the independent MLAs were backing the BJP-led government.
  • Gopal Kanda, MLA of Haryana Lokhit Party (HLP), stated earlier that the BJP-JJP alliance was on shaky ground, but the BJP could secure all 10 Lok Sabha seats independently.
  • In the 90-member Haryana assembly, BJP holds 41 seats and enjoys the backing of five independent MLAs, along with HLP MLA Gopal Kanda.
  • Both the BJP and JJP's top leadership have called separate meetings with their respective MLAs.
  • The specifics of the change are not yet clear, with senior party members remaining silent.

In response, opposition leaders have also spoken out:

  • Congress MP Deepender Hooda remarked, “The current situation in Haryana reflects the public's desire for change. People were discontent with the current state government, and we are closely monitoring the situation.”
  • Former CM and Congress leader Bhupinder Hooda commented, “We always knew the BJP-JJP alliance was merely a façade, and now it's evident they were built on shaky ground. The public sees through their tactics, and we are confident they will vote for us.”
